Age: 25
History:
The world of To Be Hero X is a world where things like fear and trust are rather new but tangible things that can affect daily lives. About 45 years in the past, trust as a concept was discovered and formed into a thing called Trust Value. Trust value is something that everyone has and the more people believe in you and trust in you, the stronger you can become. (You have to believe in yourself as well though.) A few years after that, about 5 or so, Someone who became a hero because of the people's trust became corrupt with the power and ended up killing a fellow hero. Because of him, the concept of fear was born and after he was taken down, the people's hearts became poisoned with fear and fear became tangible.
After the corrupted Hero was taken down, the Hero Affairs Commission was founded in hopes of keeping another incident like that from happening again. Their whole purpose is to keep track of the trust values of all the people and to make sure none of these people ever get too high with their trust values. They also started a tournament where the top ten heroes compete every two years to try and reach the rank 'X'. It's sort of a way to keep the other heroes in check and also keep the morale up for regular citizens. Most of these heroes in this city are put in hero agencies where each agency has different main focuses. Treeman is more for PR and publicity; FOMO caters more toward creative types and social media popularity; DOS considers themselves more of a "family of heroes" where you help push each other higher; and Mighty Glory (MG for short) is catered more toward nostalgia and gender divide. There are other hero agencies, but these ones are the big four main ones. This is a world where heroes are an important thing to have around, and having heroes be under one of these agencies helps the Commission feel like they can keep them in order.
From a young age, Nice had always loved and admired heroes, one hero in particular, Hero Smile. "You must never forget your own beliefs, even if that belief is just a simple smile. It's the biggest source of power for me to keep going." These are words that Hero Smile told Nice as a child and they're sort of like his own little motto and creed to live by. Hero Smile became a sort of beacon of hope and joy for a young Nice whom it's hinted at that he had a difficult childhood. Hero Smile's smile helped motivate him and push him through the hardships of his life. No matter what he did, he had one goal in mind, to become a Hero just like Hero Smile and to have a Smile that brings happiness to everyone. That was his dream, his motivation. He was a very young ballet dancer, and at some point before he was 18 he became an idol with his friend Wreck. They were in a duo Idol group under the newly formed TREEMAN agency. (Part of TREEMAN's PR and Publicity aspect is that this agency has their hands in a loooot of pots. Celebrity Idols, Heroes, even construction and real estate.)
The two young idols were working hard to gain popularity and trust so they could join a Hero agency together, and because they were already idols under TREEMAN it made it easy to get into their hero program. At age 18 Nice had been signed on with TREEMAN under the CEO Shang De. Wreck was also signed on, but unfortunately instead of being signed on as a hero, he was signed on to be a villain to help boost Nice up instead. They both agreed and from there on, they worked hard with making believable fights to boost Nice's trust and gain the trust of the citizens. ( A taste of their acting fights. ) Shang De started advertising Nice as a "A Perfect Hero made for the people by the people" and giving him quotes like "Even a normal person can become Mr. Perfect." It's assumed that Shang De decided a lot of these things to advertise Nice in the most appealing way, but judging by his costume and some of the poses Nice pulls off, a lot of his Hero look seems inspired by his idol Hero Smile.
About two years later, around the time Nice was 20, Shang De's son was murdered at the call of MG's Newest CEO. Shang De found this out and it sparked a huge hatred in the man and caused him to look for vengeance. And with Nice being the face of his company, he took a huge gamble and decided he already had Nice under his heel, why not make him carry out his plans of revenge for him.
The next few years Shang De created a whole lot of PR stunts and staged fights to raise Nice's trust value. His goal was to get him into the top ten hero ranking so he could destroy MG and any chances they had. During this time, Shang De was also secretly working on a project to harness fear to try and control it for his own use. With these experiments of fear, he was able to create even more stunts and opportunities for Nice to shine. Shang De used a girl named Moon, who was already a hero in their agency, and had his fear creations put her in danger. This created an opportunity for Nice to sweep in and save her. And then shortly after the two of them started dating. This of course was a script for them to play out. Much like all the fights he had with his nemesis Wreck. (While the fighting was real, the scripts and storylines were just that, real to the audience but not the the "actors".)
A year later, the Hero commission would send out a highly regarded scientist and his colleagues to the desert to investigate this strange alien ruin that they believed held a secret to neutralizing fear and trust all together. A few of the hero Agencies offered up their heroes to go along and make sure nothing bad would happen. (Most of these agencies are up to no good and have their own agendas.) Shang De caught wind that the Commission was trying to get rid of fear and about this mission to the ruins. He decided he was going to send Nice there to kill everyone and then play it off as him barely managing to fend off the bad people while everyone else there dies. At this point, Shang De already had Nice right under his thumb. Using so many tactics to manipulate him and guilt him, (it's never said when he was brought in on the experiments, but at some point he's at least guilty of knowing these fear monsters that Shang De creates is a big portion of how he's being raised up.) grooming him to be his "perfect" tool. So the next time he sees Nice, all he has to do is threaten him with letting some lower manager take over watching him because of his disappointment in Nice. He also brought up that if this research is successful he'll have his hero status revoked because no one would be a hero to get him to go to the Ruins to "take care of business."
During this mission, other heroes came, some to help the scientist and some to take down other heroes. When the other heroes were distracted, Nice came out of hiding, with the intent of carrying out Shang De's plan to kill the scientists, but before he could do anything, he was hit with a surprise attack from a girl in a mech suit whose father was the main scientist. They spent the whole time fighting with each other while Shang De's plan B slipped into the ruins. His fear creation known as the Black Clods slipped in while everyone was distracted and murdered all the scientists in the ruins. The ruins started collapsing and the only reason the heroes there came out alive was because DOS sent out a hero of their own that sort of froze everyone in place while she got the heroes that were stuck inside. TREEMAN must have an incredible PR team, because none of the other hero's there uttered a word about what happened, and somehow they were able to turn it around that Nice saved the day and it ended up bumping his hero place from #18 to #15.
A year after the ruin's incident, Nice is still rank #15, and he disappointed Shang De so much that he made good on his promise from before, letting a woman named Miss J become his manager. He was told to stay low and stay quiet because he was tired of cleaning up after Nice. And around this time, Shang De came up with a new plan to push Nice up in the rankings. They would kill one of the top Heroes that wouldn't be the biggest issue for the Commission. The hero he picked was Hero Smile. At the same time the CEO of MG had thought of a similar plan. If they got rid of Hero Smile, this person MG was trying to boost up would be guaranteed a spot. Shang De caught wind of this too and forced Nice to take this vial of fear. The vial would mess up anyone it was injected into. He told Nice to wait and see who would win the fight between Hero Smile and MG's hero Dragon Boy and whoever won, inject them with fear juice to become the victor of all. Once again, Nice disappointed Shang De. He tried to wait and be patient, but Hero Smile was his idol, the man he looked up to. Despite being crushed and seen as so low by Shang De, he still couldn't bring himself to let Smile get hurt. He knew what Shang De was asking him was wrong and this time he couldn't follow through. In desperation and fighting with his inner thoughts and horrors, he injects Dragon Boy with the fear. Unfortunately for them, Dragon Boy has an ability that makes any physical pain he receives bounce back doubly to his opponent. The fear made him stronger, and he was able to instead infect Hero Smile with the fear, making him a fear monster instead. A whole fight breaks out and Dragon boy ends up killing Smile. Nice does his best to get back at Dragon Boy but in the end he wasn't able to defeat him and was saved by the current hero who has the place of 'X'.
After the Smile incident, Nice wasn't the same. Already being crushed by everything in his life, knowing that he inadvertently caused Smiles death was like crushing that last bit of hope inside of him. Shang De made him stay low for the most part and only used him for advertisements, especially for his new real estate plans. Plans that Shang De might have been a little overeager in, because he didn't get the deeds to the land he was trying to build upon. He sends Nice to the little district he was trying to take over to essentially scam a bunch of old people out of their homes. It would have worked too, if those old people didn't have this young girl and her very smart dog named Ahu to save them. The little girl and Ahu snuck into the building Shang De sent his clone monsters to help Nice get the documents and managed to get them back briefly. The little girl and Ahu were caught and when Nice came onto the scene he apologized to the girl and dog saying he didn't have any more chances left, this was it, and stood to the side to let the Clone monsters attack. Ahu, the dog ended up getting a boost of trust after believing in himself to save the little girl and defeated the clone monster. In doing so, Nice had goops of fear fall on him and in his panicked state, ended up rubbing more into himself. He quickly flew off before anyone could see him and in his desperation he goes back to Shang De who has had enough of Nice failing him. Nice begs him for an antidote, begs him for another chance to make it into the top ten, but Shang De delivers the final blow to Nice. He tells him that the dog Ahu made it into the top ten heroes and now Nice was absolutely worthless, lower than a dog. Nice's mental state was already horrible at that time, and he was already panicking because of the fear slipping into his skin. He ran away while having a mental breakdown.
(TRIGGER WARNING FOR SUICIDE)
Later on, it's hard to know how long his mental breakdown was going on, but he found himself on top of a roof after questioning himself and everything he's done at this point, all the bad he's done, what it all was for. Down below him was a citizen who was down on his luck. The citizen started cursing Nice, shouting about how easily he could be replaced. That's when Nice slowly descended down to the part of the roof this citizen was on. He walks past the young man with this eerie calmness to his face, flashes the young man a smile with finger guns, and then falls off the roof. It's unclear if this young man was his last straw and he chose to end it, or if his lack of belief in himself caused him to not be able to fly away like he wanted to.
Personality:
If you look up the word complicated in the dictionary, you'd find the whole page is just Nice's face. He is a very complicated young man. At his core he's kind and thoughtful as seen from his dreams of being a Hero like his idol Hero Smile. In his younger years he was playful and fun loving, always wanting to bring a smile to others. He has a strong determination and will to push through for his dreams. He's eager to jump to things that will help push him higher. Maaaaybe just a little selfish in his eagerness for his dreams though. All of these things would normally make him a really great hero, but unfortunately the industry of entertainment and hero agencies have a way of corrupting that innocence, and that's what happened to Nice. And what was once determination became desperation. He was corrupted and manipulated until he couldn't even recognize himself anymore.
From a young age he was pushed into stressful situations, like becoming a young dancer. It takes years to be really good at dance especially when it's ballet and the fact that he's shown doing it so well in his idol years is proof that he had to have started young. He was taught at a young age that if you don't follow through, things can be ripped away from you just that easily, but still he pushed through. His dreams of being a hero were like a beacon of light for him. When he got older he was accepted into an idol agency that helped boost your trust and he became great friends with his idol partner, Wreck. With Wreck he could really show his more playful sides. When the camera wasn't on them, he could be a little more himself and not someone that just had to be perfect all the time. The idol industry can be just as stressful and demanding as being a dancer and your life as an idol could be stripped away just as easily. So he has always been placed in these intense and demanding positions.
When he was finally able to take that step up to become the hero he wanted to be, when Shang De signed him and his partner Wreck on for his hero agency, it was something that really solidified all that hard work was paying off, but because he was so desperate and only thinking about his own moving forward, he didn't really realize that he was essentially stepping on Wreck to boost himself up. Wreck became a villain for Nice's story so he could shine and while Wreck didn't complain, Nice didn't object either. But still behind closed doors when the citizens couldn't see them, Wreck and Nice still got along just fine. Celebrating Nice's victories, teasing each other, it felt like they were in a good place. Unfortunately for Nice, with his trust rising so much and the way the citizen's viewed him as "The Perfect Hero", that really started to take a toll on Nice. In this world, when your Trust level is high enough, how the world views you really does change things about you. For example, there was a Hero named Firm Man. He was once a firefighter who told everyone he just thought to stand firm for a little girl he was trying to save, and because of that everyone thought of him as an unmoving man and that is what he became. He couldn't bend down to sleep, or to shower properly, he was "Unmoving". Another example being a hero named GhostBlade. The citizens saw him as a silent killer, and now he can't talk at all, even when he desperately tries to. So with a system like that, when the world sees Nice as "Perfect" he has to be "perfect". But what really is perfection? No one can really decide on what perfection is, and because of this, the act of being perfect really takes a toll on Nice and his mental state. It's hard to know if he had OCD tendencies when he was younger, but those tendencies really increased tenfold when the citizens saw him as perfect.
With his mental state the way it was and his desperation to please Shang De in being the best hero he could be, he was manipulated often. He followed scripts instead of being allowed to be a real hero. He was pulled into Shang De's shady side hustle of experimenting with Fear. Shang De ordered him to do horrible things because he wanted him as his tool, his weapon for revenge and because Nice was so desperate to hold onto this title of hero, so desperate for Shang De's approval, so desperate for something, he kept following his orders. Partially in his desperation and his own fear of being thrown aside. He wasn't completely changed, there were still sparks of that sweet boy with a sweet dream inside of him. Hero Smile was able to pull them out briefly when he was fighting against Dragon Boy. Even though Shang De ordered Nice to take out Smile, to destroy whoever won the fight, Smile asked Nice to look within himself at what a real Hero was supposed to be, and even though those words were drowning in his own psyche of torment, he was able to pull out that side of him again. He wanted to be a hero and he tried to save Smile. Unfortunately he wasn't able to in the end, and knowing that Smile died, and he felt completely responsible for it, it broke something in him. That little glimmer of hope he could still hold onto, it shattered that day.
After that day Shang De was able to manipulate Nice even easier than before. Even if he knew the things he was doing were completely wrong, it felt like there was no point, he was drowning in guilt, disappointment, all these expectations and he couldn't pull himself back up. His last moments we get to see, he was at that breaking point, letting a child and a dog almost get hurt because they were holding the one thing that Shang De wanted (the deeds for the land) and Nice had already failed him so many times. He didn't want to and he even had a look of guilt in his eyes, but he stepped aside because he was still hanging onto that desperation. When he went back to Shang De with his failure and Shang De pretty much gave up on him, he finally broke, having a mental breakdown about why he did all this, what was it all for, why was he even trying to be a hero, and then when he snapped out of it, it was already too late.
All of his sunshine and playfulness, all of his warmth, it was snuffed out by the industry and the agency and his innocent dreams were turned twisted and messy.

When presented with a choice, is the character more likely to stick with tried and true methods? Or make something new up on the fly? Nice is more likely to stick with the tried and true methods. He's used to following orders and doing things in a particular way that he isn't really used to making things up on the fly. His usual methods of fighting and everything else he does usually work. He could be pushed out of his elements to try something new, but that is usually not his first option to pick.
What is more important to your character, preserving the past or forging a future? Forging a future is definitely more important to Nice. He's had a dream to be like his idol Hero Smile since he was a child and a lot of what he's done in life was to push himself forward to gain those dreams.
How does your character influence their own story? What about the stories of others? Nice isn't exactly the kind of character that influences his own story. He's the type of person to follow orders (and most of the time he's not good at doing that.) He's been in the entertainment industry from a young age (among his hero-ing, he was an idol and a ballerino) and in that kind of industry, you have to follow orders or you could easily be blacklisted. As for the stories of others, because of Nice's determination to an unhealthy degree, he can make rather bad decisions that cause hurt for others to rise to the top.

Are you alright with your character’s canon being used as a Recommended Reading?: Yes! Absolutely!
